oil lost
Just got a 2001 mustang cobra with 33800 miles on it. It looks brand new inside and out. I change all the fluids. For the first 3 weeks I drove about 2 times per week for only 5 to 10 miles at a time. My son came to town and gave him the car. He drove it over the weekend and then he check the oil and it was 2qts low. filled it back up and then he drove it back home which is 13 hrs one way. Did not lose much oil at that time. Drove it for one week only in town and lost 1qt of oil. He said sometimes it will smoke right when you turn it on. The oil is 5w30 mobil 1 with a ford filter. What do you think is wrong?
A series of short trips tend to keep the engine from fully warming up. This means that the process of combustion generated water that drips down the bottom of the engine will make up for oil normally burnt or leaked by the engine. When the oil is checked the level appears normal.
The first long trip that you take after that will allow the engine to heat up and boil off the water based sludge that build up on the bottom of the oil pan. Suddenly you will be missing oil. [8D]
These short trips especially in a cold climate are bad for the motor because this sludge also contains acids of combustion that wear out and eat up the engine. The very same reason why cold thermostats are not adviced.
You should also check for oil leaks in case there is one .
good luck
