Default Honing????

My best friend has an 89' ford gt, that he is almost done rebuilding....

He is in the process of honing the cylinder head.. does honing do anything besides waste time?

Does it add horses?
Would it help my car when I rebuild it????

Do you mean porting the heads or honing the cylinder walls?

You have to hone the cylinder walls or your piston rings wont seat right.
And to do it right it should be at a 30 deg. crosshatch, and use the small stones if you have one.
Yes porting the head will give you some power,if you do it right. You cant go crazy with it or it will the opposite effect.

Im not talking about the block I am talking about the cylinder head? That has anything to do with the pistons?

What he is doing is putting the gasket on the cylinder head and tracing how far out the gasket sits..... then shaves the metal off so it's smooth....... does this add horses???? How many????

Sounds like what he's doing is "port matching" the intake runners to the cylinder heads to match the intake ports in the intake manifold. This will help the HP some but can't give you a number. Port matching eliminates any ledges that may be present between the two that will disturb the airflow across the transistion from the intake to the head. This is an old and tested hot rodders trick that really does work provided you don't go down too far into the head passageway and get too big to kill the flow velocity.

port matching doesn't do hardly anthing - its a good idea to do it while your there but it definately won't do much of anything for performance (at least not noticable) because the bottleneck is the short side radius and the bowl area.

md..I beg to differ on that as it will add a fair amt it depends how far you go into the port...you are right in bowl blending and reshaping is where the big hp...an undercut valve is the only way to go on any heads....
