Default GT Authentication

Hi, I am new to the forum. I live in Australia. I have just bought a 1966 GT Fastback and would like to find out more about how a GT differs from a standard model. Were they a factory option or a dealer option, and can a genuine GT be authenticated by the VIN#? The car I've bought seems the real deal - A Code, 4V, 4-speed, disc brakes, fog lamps, rally pack, exhaust through rear panel, etc. I have no regrets if its not a real GT, but it would be good to know. Any help would be appreciated.
Regards, David

Welcome...and yes the vin(and the sound) should tell you. The standard model comes with a v6. You said 4v so im assuming your engine says 4.6(they do here in the us) if it does it is indeed a GT or cobra not sure what they aer called there

Welcome. Sounds like you have a very nice car there. I bet you get lots of looks with it. The 4V sounds like a 351C engine, but to decode the VIN go here:

Sound about right by the specs, 66 289 4v(4 barrell) with the tucked exhaust sounds right, How many lugs on the axle? Factory V8 car should have 5 in 66 if memory serves me right., but then again I could be wrong, I smoked most of those brain cells away yrs ago. But mustangman is right, hit up the classic section, you should be good there. Welcome to the forums and enjoy your new baby!!

Unless he dropped a new engine in there, I'm going to assume it's a 289.
