Click noise from my engine...

i drive a 2002 Explorer SPORT 2wd 4.0L 6 cylinder with 45k on it.

I noticed when i started her up this mourning it made a "click" noise followed by another small click noise....

it happens about every 1 minute intervals..... i was thinking it was because the engine was cold...but after it was all warmed up it still kept doing it.

I had my oil changed about 3 weeks ago....i am also assuming it could be low oil in my engine as a clicking noise will sometimes mean low oil espcially after a recent oil change.

Any ideas tho???

Noises are hard to diagnose. Here's a link to help figure out what it might be.

I had the same problem on an Escape. It turned out to be a heatshield on the the exhaust manifold. When it was cold the heat from the exhaust manifold would start to warm it up and make this click sound. After the engine was at temp it wouldn't do it anymore.

RE: Click noise from my engine...

ok i just looked at her for the first time since hearing the noise...and i found out EXACTLY what it is...

in one of the pulleys, the very tip of it just "clicks" and stops moving all together...however the actually pulley is still spinning with the belt...i am not to sure but its the last pulley right next to the ABS moduel...

my question is.... theres a small bolt right in the middle of the pulley, i am thinking making it needs to be tightened.... does this indicate a bad pulley along with whatever it is its pumping(any ideas?)....i am hoping the main system itself is still working because i i dont want it to mess with my engine....

anyone have a diagram of the whole drivebelt system?

Im not familiear with 4.0 V6, here is a reference of accessory belt drive out of 1998 explorer. Let us know if it looks the same and which pulley.

anyway....how would i go about fixing this? the actual pulley is spinning but the center of it just "clicks" to a complete stop for about 20 seconds then clicks again and spins...theres a bolt in the middle of it...should i try tightening that up? is this cuasing my engine damage??

Im no expert on 4.0L V6, but its not the alternator pulley, right? Because alternator is on the other side.
Its not idler, nor tensioner, nor water pump. So Im thinking it must be the AC pump? (and I dont know)

If it is AC pump, then you have AC clutch there and its corresponding solinoid switch. Replace the solinoid switch, its cheap and should fix your troubles with the pump clutch engaging, if it is indeed the problem, and if the AC pump clutch is not broke.

i assumed it was the AC pump...its the in center of pulley and makes a click noise when the clutch engages then stops spinning all together...

do i need a new clutch now?

Clutch is operated by a solinoid switch. Since it is cheap and easy to replace, that is what you going to replace first. If that doesnt fix it, then you repair the clutch. I had the same on a 4.6, it takes 10 minutes to repair, go to autozone, get solinoid switch, replace, try it out. It will either work, or not.

If you careful with your new switch you can return it after you done. :)
