99 V-6 Vibration
Would a Bassani exhaust system cause excessive vibration at idde and while running?
I've had three different mechanics tell me that the vibration is coming from the exhaust but that there was nothing wrong with the exhaust system. They tell me that the Bassani's have a vibration to them. Would Flowmasters or Magnaflow be a better choice?
We bought this car for our daughter and it is completely solid except the vibration. It does leak a drop and runs out very nice. It has a power train warranty so I'm not worried if it's in the rear end or tranny but so far eveyone is telling me it's the exhaust.
Could it be the cats are plugged up. The car has 88,000 miles on it.

This is a tough one to answer for sure. The V-6 is inherently more prone to vibration than a V-8 just due to the design and fewer cylinders so I just don't know what to tell you. If the entire exhaust system is properly mounted with the hangers in rubber supports, that should be keeping the vibrations to a minimum IMO. Can you see the system and tell if anything is not hanging in rubber? Are all the hangers being used or did they miss any? Did the mechanics check the motor mounts to be sure they weren't cracked or broken? Sometimes more hangers on the exhaust may change the resonant frequency of the system and reduce the vibrations. Did anyone check the driveshaft for imbalance? Can you be more specific about exactly what is vibrating and where you feel it coming from? This would help us give you more things to look at.
Roundman: Thanks for the response. I have had it to an exhaust shop and they tell me that everything underneath looks good. I've inspected the driveshaft and I do not see any evidence of any weights missing or any dents. The motor mounts look fine visually.
I wonder how the car would react if the catalytic converters were bad? The car seems to idle just slighty higher then it should plus it takes quite awhile for the car to come off of high idle when it's first started. Keep in mind we live in Phoenix and it's over 100 degrees right now.
The vibration does seem to be exhaust related. It is present at idle as well as at speed. The best description is like a back massage vibrator.
