Default Help, 88 Mustang LX Problems

I am 17, Just bought this car for 150 (Cheap I know) I got it to run only when I put starter fluid in air intake, It will run till the starter fluids gone then cuts off, I dont know if this model has fuel injection, It could be that it doesnt have much gas and is sitting on a hill, Is there anyway I could check to see if its getting gas, Anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this problem? Be descriptive as possible so I can try to check it out, If you can help I'd appreciate it much Thanks.

Nice to have you on board.
Just sit in the car and turn the key on.
Do not try to start it.
You should hear a noticeable metallic
humming coming from the rear for about
5 seconds.
That is your fuel pump in the gas tank
pressurizing the gas line, and shutting
down for not cranking.
If you don't hear it the relay under the seat could
be shot, or the pump may be bad, or bad wiring.
Since you bought it witout running it you
can't be sure the last guy may have had this problem.

Being an '88, it's probably injected... Quick way to tell is if the air filter is on top of the engine (sitting on top of the carberator) or if it's mounted to the side of the engine compartment... If it's injected, you'll have a big hose conected to the intake, the other end conected to a round thing with little black box thing on it, thats your air sensor... If you have that hose off to spray in the starter fluid, put it back on... The car will not run (or run very rough) if it's off, it will also run rough without the air filter... If thats not it, go with whatcorvette guy said...Another quick wayto tell if your getting gas up to the injectors, theres a chrome tube coming up the left side of your engine (thats your gas line), After turning on the key, hopefully you'll hear the pump run as described, follow that tube up and you'll see a fitting that looks like a tire stem... Push the valve in and gas shouldspray out (put a rag over topof it becouse it will spray all over the place), do it real quick just to see if gas is coming out... If it does, your problem most likely is somewhere else... You may want to run down to your local parts store and pick up a manuel, that will help a lot... Good luck and welcome...

no lol, I just wasnt thinking @ first that it didnt have any gas, when you pay 150 for a car you assume sometihng major, not just it being out of gas lol

Welcome to the forums... it's about not right that you got into that stang for 150 dollars... Your next purchase should be a good manual for it (like Chilton's)... From there, you would be on your way.
