What does an orangish brownish color of coolant in the resevoismean...Would it possibly have something to do with the coolant being nearly a year old

Sounds like you have a rust/corrosion problem. Do a complete flush of the system (not just the radiator...flush the engine block and heater core as wel)and put in some new fluid.

Yea if your mustang is old than it is a rust corrosion problem. Flush it out and put some new stuff in.

Have you ever mixed colored coolant? that could be the problem but do the flush and put that system cleaner stuff in it.
