Default ticking noise - sometimes

I have a 2002 GT with 24,000 miles, manual trans., all stock

Recently it started making a ticking noise in the engine compartment when I first start it up.

I drive 5 miles to work, and when I get there and sit and listen, it no longer is ticking. If I turn it off and then back on, no ticking.

But when I start it up in the evening the ticking is back.

thanks

What kind of oil you run? Have you checked how full the oil is? When was your last oil change?

I change the oil and filter myself every 3k miles.

I use sae 5w20 per the owners manual, and then check the level every 3 weeks or so. I checked the level a few days ago

(i est. my miles, its actually about 600 under 24k)

Sounds like it could be the anti-drain back valve in the filter allowing the oil to drain from the block back to the pan.

well I changed the oil filter and oil, but the noise is still there. Disappears after I drive a couple of miles.

I did notice an accumulation of what looks like yellow margarine in the top inside of the oil cap!
