Default trans problems :(

so I'm drivin' along, and I happen to notice my RPM gauge was at like 3000 rpms. I was going about 55 mph. then I thought, "hey. I'm not a honda civic. shouldn't I be at like 1200 RPMs?" I eventually infer that I am in 4th gear, not top gear. so I flip my overdrive on and off, to see if it does anything. nothing. I push it to the floor, and coast back to 55, still at 3000 R's. I tried that a few times, nothing would get my car to go into top gear. I even tried coming to a complete stop. still, no. I put it in neutral at about 65 mph, then coasted to 45 mph, and put it back into drive, sure enough, back to about 1200 R's. I was in top gear. but does anyone know why it would do that? I had about a quarter tank of regular gas, and filled it up to about 3 quarters with medium grade gas. it was real cold the day before (below freezing) and it warmed up to about 35-40 the day it happened. I have a 1998 V6 with an auto trans. thanks for any input.

I'm not a auto tranny guru either but you might want to check you trany fluid (level, burning smell, ect), they start doing weird things if it's low or fluid is going bad...
