Default torque converter

i was just wondering how a high stall converter helps. what is the reason for installing one? how does it affect daily driving? miliage?
i heard it wont let the trans shift into 4th unless under high revs....is that true?

I can sum it up by saying... when you give your car gas it will rev to about 1800 rpm before it starts moving, a higher stall will simply make your car rev higher up before it starts moving. Obviously you know your car makes more power at, say, 2500 rpm than at 1800 rpm, so you will accelerate faster.

a so called "looser" (higher stall) converter on the street can be tricky to get used to as the car won't begin to move right away when you touch the gas, so it takes some getting used to and it's easy to chirp the tires when you don't really mean to also. since the looser converter churns up the tranny fluid much more than stock, you must install an aftermarket tranny cooler in order to keep the temps down in the tranny too. failure to do this will result in burning up the tranny due to the excess heat. if you do a lot of stop and go driving, it might not be a good idea to have a higher than stock stall converter either because of the extra heat it generates in the tranny.

a shift kit is also recomended to bump up the pressure.....and to firm up the shifts..by adding a 'vertor it won't shify as hard as with the stock one

Ive got a 2500 stall torque converter in my 83 I am still getting used to it. Ive had it in for a year plus the 2 stage shift kit. What I diff from stokc though, Way better response, I think it was worth the money as performance wise.

well my gas mileage has maybe increased a little, Not by much, No increase in gas used either. Only time my tires chirp is only life I get the rpms up, normal driving they may do it a little. I just like it cause of the way faster shifts, No lagging like stock.
