Odometer has quit working.

Odometer has quit working.
I noticed the other day that my odometer has been stuck at 95,779. Not sure how long this has been this way, the speedometer has continued to work. The car is a 95 GT. What is the procedure for changing out the odometer? Does the entire cluster have to be replaced? How do I match the miles on the one I buy to the one that no longer works?

RE: Odometer has quit working.
I was told the problem could be caused by one of two things, the cluster or a chip on the tranny . I have the same problem with my car and have yet to actually get it fixed since im not putting any miles on my car now [. But i was told it would be about 250 to get it fixed somewhere whichever the problem was.

That trans has a Mechanical Speedometer. If the Speedometer itself works then there is a small little plastic part inside the odometer that has broken. It needs to be preofessionally replaced. If you go ahead and buy another cluster you can't turn back the mileage if needed.

That would be my guess as well. I remember way back in 96 I bought a 79 stang with a 302 V8 modded, I out put in 4.10 gears in the rear end my speedo didnt work, When I start off my speedo would got to normal speed reading then when I floored the gas, The speedo would read 120mph, I was like WTF!!!! then I went to the tranny shop, The guy told me I needed a new plastic speedo gear, that reads the proper speedo gear setting. Got it fixed work like it as puposed too.

pulling the instrument cluster out of the dash is a royal pain in the ***, I wouldn't bother doing it just to fix/replace the odometer myself. if you do get a new one and install it, before you do you can hook the input shaft up to a power drill and run it to make the mileage go to where ever you want it to read.
