There is an astronomical difference between a Boss 351 and a regular Mustang with a 429. That's the equivalent of saying that a plain jane 69 sportsroof with a 302 is worth $50,000 because you saw a Boss 302 sell for that much. Two completely different animals.

If the 71' is a Fastback or Mach1 I would get that, reguardless of matching numbers. They are getting very popular and becoming more expensive every day.

As for the engine specs take a gander at these...

Engine Codes

250 cid 1V 6cyl 145 hp
L

302 cid 2v V-8 210 hp
F

351 cid 2v V-8 240 hp
H

351 cid 4v V-8 280 hp (CJ)
M

351 cid 4v V-8 285 hp
M

351 cid 4v V-8 330 hp (Boss)
R

429 cid 4v V-8 370 hp (CJ)
C

429 cid 4v V-8 375 hp ((CJ-R)
J

My wife has a 71' Mach1 with the 285hp 351 4v in it, she has been offered $9k for it in unrestored needs floorpans and complete interior, suspension and engine overhaul. Her mother bought it new off the showroom floor and left it to her when she died.

The cars are worth a lot depending on options and are becoming more expensive now reguardless of options. By the way, the 4V cleveland would gain an easy 50hp with just a carb and cam swap, they were restricted and needed to flow more, as some of you may remember, they were NASCAR spec engines and put into production cars. It is by far one of the best engines ever made but also carries a bad rep because people cant build them right. I have never had a problem or a disapointment about a cleveland and its performance.

And that guff about them not being good daily drivers, if you dont mind the bad fuel economy and no visibility out the rear window then they are a great car to drive. There are going to always be a lot of people that say otherwise and have never even stepped into one let alone own one.

+1 on the 71'

I'm pretty sure the 1971 Boss 351 is a lot more rare car than the 1971 429 SCJ, therefore worth more.

Okay genius, go take a look at "completed listings" on eBay for 71 Mustangs, since that's your "source" for valuation. The most expensive car on there that has sold in the last 60 days is a Boss 351 at just over $30,000.All of the rest of them sold for way under ten grand. I wouldn't dream to "do not try and tell me about muscle cars" since it's obvious that you don't have a clue about them. The Boss you mentioned above did not sell at it's $50k+ bid. The owner is obviously a Barrett-Jackson watcher as well. For the record, Ford (well, Kar Kraft actually) made 1,806 Boss 351's. Ford built 1,865 429 cars. The Boss was actually the fastest Ford built to that point in the 1/4 mile, beating all of the Shelby's and the mighty Boss 9. Unless this car is an ultra low mile, pristine car, it's worth nowhere near a Boss.

A 375hp 71 would not be as quick asan 89 with 225hp.
If the 2 cars are similar in price the 71 is junk. Mark my words.

It may seem surprising to some, obvioulsy not all, but yes, the Boss 351 will be worth alot more. For one, it's a BOSS... only made em 3 years, all HIGHLY HIGHLY collectable.

Secondly, I gurantee you the BOSS 351 is signifcantly faster than any Boss or Mach 1 aside from maybe a 428 Equipped 69-70 Mach.

But if the car is in any kind of reliable shape, i can't imagine that it would be priced anywhere near a '89 5.0
