Default Car buying help...another pathetic newbee!

Hi folks. Well, as the title says, another newbee here. I have an opportunity to pick up a pretty nice 96 Cobra for $6000. Seems like a pretty good price. Car is in decent shape, needs a little cleaning up, has just under 90K miles. White w/black leather, chrome Cobra R wheels and fairly new tires. Was wondering if anyone would be willing to offer opinions on the price and also if there is anything in particular that I should be checking for or worried about on one of these fine cars. Last Mustang I owned was a 68 notchback with Boss 302 shortblock back in the early to mid 70s. I really loved that car and still miss it. Finally got permission from the wife to start looking for a Mustang hobby car. Thanks for any and all input. I know that newbees can be really annoying!!

Yeah it could be a good project car or something just fun to drive. It does have the 4.6 motor though and if you plan on upgrading it it will be expensive and hard to find upgrades for the 4.6 motor(well not hard if you have the money), if you can get a 95 Cobra they are rare and have the 5.0 HO with the GT40 heads and intake. But 6 grand isn't bad for that car at all you can clean it up and it will be a great car. I am just not a big fan of the 4.6 motors. Take it for a test drive and then take it to Sears for a free steering evaluation on your test drive that way they can check for any suspension parts that may be bad. Check the oil and smell it and make sure you do not smell gas or anything.

well not knocking your car..96 wasn't the best years for these car..but the price is close and if the car is dent free with good paint..just give it the good once over or twice..don't be in a hurry......if car has been paint take a magnet around the car..look for sand marks etc...look at the engine bay..check for replace parts etc....look at the lower rear quarters..look for rock chip as this may lead to this car being track tested alot*L*...if car is what ya want over 5500 and work from there..good luck

I always avoid using the odometer reading to influence my buying decision on fast cars.
People tend to beat on Mustangs. I know I do. Now if I copuld just blow my current engine.....

Default Thanks so much for the responses

I really want to thank all you guys for your input....much appreciated!
Looks like I won't be getting the car after all. Got a Carfax report and it turns out that the car has a 'rebuilt' title. The car still looks pretty good but I can't seem to find any info on what led to that rebuilt title and that makes me uncomfortable to say the least.
Looks like I won't be able to join your ranks just yet. But I'm not going to give up.
Thanks again to all that responded!

A 96 cobra would be a great project car and the price sounds pretty descent actually. If your looking for a good hobby car and you like the vehicle, I say go for it. Some think the 96 cobras werent that great but Ive never heard any complaints from the guys in my area that have them. Theirs run just as well as the newer ones in this area. As far as what to look for, just make sure it shifts nice, runs good, and doesnt make any funny noises. If your ok there then your good to go. If its gonna be a hobby car your gonna love it and I say [sm=smiley20.gif].

Default Thanks 98Stang and 94Cbra!

I'm going to keep trying to find something and do a little more research on that '96. It's that DOHC 4V engine that really got me revved up! There's no doubt that one of the Cobras is what I would love to have. This one gave me that opportunity because of the price. There are lots of Mustangs on eBay but the one's in my price range don't seem to exist. I certainly understand why.....these are nice cars that had a pretty high original price tag.
Thanks again for all the help and encouragement.....much appreciated!!!

the rebuilt title means the car was either in a big wreck and sustained major damage or it could have been flood damaged, so you did the right thing by passing it by IMO. the 4.6 modular motor as it is known has not been around near as long so the aftermarket parts for it are low in volume and more expensive than the same parts for a 5.0L motor, but if that's what you want, go for it! just take lots of cash with you! LOL
