Transmission randomly stops engaging
tehehe, looks like I bought somebody else's problem!
Transmission is not "shot". I drove about 20 miles and stopped at my sisters house for about an hour. On the way home I was going about 60mph, slowed down to about 30mph and was coming back up to 60 and the transmission stopped engaging at 40mph. I slowed down, transmission down-shifted, sped back up to 35 and it stopped engaging yet again.
Made it home and lifted it up to find the speed sensor that is supposedly not working on it (causing CEL to come on). I found bare wires, thinking that they are shorting each-other out while touching. I put a rubber "coat" over each one and reset the battery, and the CEL came back on. Sensor looked good. Not dirty, no debris, fairly clean besides a little fresh oil.
Drove it around for a few minutes and got up to 40mph with no problems.
What is going on!? Could it be from the speed sensor?
I'll be taking it over to my dads on Thursday & we're going to flush the transmission fluid (which is still pretty good - red, no burnt smell), and we'll be doing other general "fresh-ups" on the car. We'll try and figure out why it did this.
Also, why is the engine or transmission making a "winding sound"? The sounds of belts winding, or even a supercharger (minus sound as cool )

I don't know much about that but I'll mention it to the people who are are helping me work on it.
Was his car cutting out power to the rear wheels (or front, whatever his car was)?
I lost complete power to the rear and was pretty much revving the engine when I gave it gas at 40mph.
Thanks for the information

RE: Transmission randomly stops engaging
check the trans side of TV calble It goes from the trans to the throtlle body for the white clip the hold to the trans side If its cracked and one it starts to move that clip will move apart and it will engage the kick down early that why you cant go over 40mph
