Well, most of the time you will get some gear noise (less often with FMS gears), some gear manuf even say that gear whine is to be expected. Now, is it whine (as in gears) or a howl (as in bearings)? If the backlash is alittle on the tight side thats cool, but... does the noise come and go with gas or is it there all the time?

[sm=noooo.gif] The howling you here is not a good thing. It won't really hurt anything, but you don't want to let it go for too long. I had the same problem with my gears....the damn howl is so annoying [:@] Mine would hit at about 35mph when I let off the gas. THe backlash may be little off, but when I did it setting the backlash was not that hard. My problem, which may be yours, was that the pinion nut was not tight enough. You want to make sure you tighten it until there is no lateral movement.....but not too tight! You can use a torque wrench or jsut tighten it in small increments until there is no movement. Hope this helps[&:]

I would say the howl isnt good and needs to be fixed. My old 96gt as well as my Cobra have 3.73's and are whisper quiet. Sound like I never opened up the rear diff.

good gears properly installed and set up should not be whining at all.
