Default 1967 engine?

I just bought a 1967 mustang its got a straight 6, and i was wondering what engine would be best to swap to 289,302, 351. what i would like is to get to around 350-400hp at a relatively inexpensive price.

i was looking at putting this one in the car or would it be better to just go to a junk yard and buy a rebuild kit so it would be turnkey ready?

The swap should not be too difficult. You did not state whether you plan to stay carbed or opt up to FI, but I promise you are not the first one to do this. I have a friend that just installed a early 90's 302 in his fastback, and it is slick. I would suggest, for better information, you post this up in the Classic Section. The folks in there have done what you are suggesting and can help guide you in the right direction. If you use a 351, you will have more block to work with. You can stroke it, spray it, blow it, or whatever and have a better margin for safety. The 306 you are looking at sounds like a decent deal, but you will need to purchase all the other components for the engine. You can probably find a complete engine at a junk yard and rebuild it. Unless you already have a 302, purchasing a short block and then heads, intake, etc. will add up. Good luck with your project. Welcome to the board.

OK, i read 150pgs of 302vs 351 articles on the web, and i think im gonna go with a 351, because of block strength and durability, and it seems to have better over all specs except for the whole weight issue what are the experts thoughts on this?

This is a debate that could go on and on. I would say that it depends on the general use of the car. If you plan to rod it and take it to the track, or force feed it, then the 351 may be a better choice. It will be more forgiving of higher HP use, and give you a better base to build higher numbers. There are several members who run turbos, superchargers, and spray, all of whom run 302's with minimal problems. You can however, reach a point where the 302 will be maxed out in the pursuit of higher numbers. If you plan to just putt around and enjoy the car, and not constantly build on her, the 289 or 302 will serve this puprose very well. Not to mention the "wow" factor of having the 351. Or the "orginality" of the 289. If it were mine, or if I were to replace my engine and had the choice, the 351 would be it. Just my opinion my friend.

Ok thanks, i just got back from talking to my mechanic and close friend, and he's telling me go with the 351, so my mind is made with that. no how about springs do i need to replace the front only or all around? What about disk brakes? and which springs are good on a budget.

Sorry my man, you will have to ask the guys in the Classic section, I dont know the answers to those questions. I know disks would be better than drums, and they do make a conversion kit. But like I said, you need to ask the guys that build what you have to find out about springs and the like. Lets see some pics!
