I dont guess I know what GT stands for either, but the very first GT was introduced on April 17th, 1965. It was available on all 3 models in production. The base GT had a 225hp 289ci, the high performance model had a 271hp, 289ci.

...and coincidentally, the "GTO" in Pontiac GTO means Gran Turismo Omologato, although I have no idea what the Omologato means.

Here's a better question I've been dying to know the answer to for a long time, what is the difference between a GT class car and a true "sports car"??? A lot of automotive journalists seem to consider some really fast performance cars (even Corvette Z06's) as "GT's" and not as "sports cars" so just what the heck is a sports car??

" Grand Tourismo" I think is meant to imply "performance with luxury", NOT an all-out sports car..

Ferrari Enzo = all out sports car
Mustang = GT

Corvette = somwhere in between

Omologato refers to the homologation rules for sanctioned racing. Manufacturers had to make a certain numbe of cars for the public in order to compete in certain race classes.
