correct me if im wrong, isn't OD just like another gear with a longer ratio for better economy and lower rpm driving on the freeway to take stress off the motor.

When an "overdrive" gear is used the output rpm is greater than the input rpm.In other words, the output shaft spins faster than the input shaft.

Count the gears. If you have a 5 speed auto, with OD, you can feel the gear change and watch the tach to confirm shift points.

And ususually if you have an overdrive "switch or button" in your car it is there to STOP overdrive from engaging. Overdrive "on" is the normal setting. But sometimes you want to stop the car from going into overdrive. Situations such as trailer towing or if you aredriving on really hilly roads you might want O/D to be off so you get better engine braking & less "hunting" (tranny constantly going in & out of overdrive each time vehicle loading changes)
