Default 302?

I have a 97' 3.8L and I found a 302 for sale for $600 in my area. Is that possible to engine swap to a 302 and still be street legal. My dad said no b/c of the emissions control and the computer. The 302 is currently in an 89'. I live in NC and I don't know about NC's laws and stuff like that. Someone please help me I'm really tempted to just buy it and then find a roller or a junker and drop the 302 in it. I need help!!

The way California is (strictest smog rules) is that as long as it was available from the factory, you can install it. Must retain all original emissions equipment. That may help.

Honestly, it wouldbe easier to just sell the v6 and buy a gt. most likely cheaper too. You're looking at a lot of money after you swap everything (computer, wiring harness, motor, etc.). Also remember that the 96-up cars had the 4.6 so none of the electronics will be the same. After all that you could have probably just bought a decent new edge gt.
