Default Service Engine Soon light came on

I have a 2001 V6 with 120K miles and the Service Engine Soon Light came on. All other gages are normal. It is a bit over due for an oil change.

Has anyone had this happen?

Should I take it to get the oil changed and see if that does it? Or take it to someone and have them hook it up to the computer and see what it spits out!?

Thank you in advance for your help!

go to autozone and they will read the code for you, then post the code here and we can try to help direct you to what may be wrong. an oil change will not turn the light on.

Change your oil yourself!!! Its easy easy easy!

My wife got under her stang at 9 months preggers and changed her oil while I was at work.

I would have Autozone check it for codes too, change the oil no matter what.

I found out the code: P0401! Was able to take the OBD II scanner home and my dad showed me how to use it. Any advice on how to fix the EGR Valve? Where is it located? I can't find any pics[sm=boohoo.gif]

it may not be the egr valve, it may be the dpfe sensor, it costs $45. you can take it off in less than five minutes, it is on the front of the engine near the EGR valve.

I went ahead and changed the EGR. The guy @ Auto Zone said I didn't have the sensor that was mentioned here before. So, now I have to go back for the them to clear the code, and I will wait and see after that.

Thank you for all your help!

you do have the sensor i changed it on my mustang. i changed the egr valve too and the light stayed on so i had to change the dpfe sensor. i hope the egr valve fixes it for you if not change the sensor, trust me you have one!
