Gearshift for Automatic 97 GT
Went to drive my car this morning and I couldn't get my car out of PARK.
The buttons on the side of the stick couldn't be pushed in. My foot was on the brake while attempting to put it into reverse.
I am planning to get brand new tires ASAP and a front end alignment at the same time. I thought I would get some suggestions from you guys so I know what to tell the technician. BTW, this has happened at least twice before and don't think it was cold-weather related.

check the shifter release button under the brake pedel..try pushing it all the way in while someone moves the shifter..it just may need to be adjusted closer to the pedal..hope this helps

the old fart sounds like he knows what he's talking about here!
damn new cars with built in interlocks to protect the idiots from themselves just keep getting more and more complicated.
I hate Ralph Nader and Joan Claybrook![:@]

RE: Gearshift for Automatic 97 GT
Thanks for the tip. I'll put it in the glove box and keep it handy. I took the car into the dealer and they gave me another tip.
Anyway, Ford looked at it and they found that someone had spilled soda in the gearshift area and cleaned it up for me. I can't imagine why that would affect it now. The techs said that everything looked fine and until it happened more frequently there was nothing they could fix.
I can't understand why the gearshift would stick in the first place to my car or anybody elses. (Yes, I did check the repair manual to see what was involved!)
