Default Starting Problems

2000 Mustang GT 5 Speed

Having some problems with the car starting. Heres, what happens:

Turn the key and usually gets a few click,
Turn the key again and it usually starts.( sometime it cranks slow)

It has a new battery and I checked the terminals and they are clean. Sometimes I will get in the car and it starts right up no problem. Other times I need to cycle thekey a few times.

Let me know what to check and i'll give it a shot.

Thanks,
Mike

check the other end of the battery neg cable, usually at the block, make sure it's clean and tight. Otherwise I would suspect a dead spot in the starter winding.

it could be your fuel pump. my 04 gt does that on occasion. in mine, when u turn the key to ACC you can actually hear the fuel pump kicking in. its like a high pitched whining noise. try turning the key only to acc for a couple secs then turn it the rest of the way.

My alternator is only putting out 12.4 volts. It should be putting out somewhere around 14 right?

If you tested the car using the battery posts while the engine is running and only see 12.4 volts, then yes, you could have a crapped out alternator. There is also an large in -line fuse to the alternator. Just find the power wire to the alternator and make sure the alternator is getting power. If not, trace the wire back to find the fuse. If it is getting power, then the alt is bad.
