Default Random Ailments (can you diagnose?)

I'm sorry for asking for so much help on this site...But i have a few issues on my car.

I picked it up from the mechanics today (they installed my exhaust) and took it on a all day drive (to a different city, for a job interview.) On the way i had a few issues, that i am stumped on:

--- after a lengthy drive, i pulled into a gas station and had steam coming from under the hood. I popped it and saw the Overflow was bubbling over. Its done this before...Over heated like this and did that (this is the ONLY thing...I dont see a lack in power or anything else). The overflow cap is cracked, and doesnt stay on...So, is this the problem? Is it just overflowing and comes out due to the heat boiling it and the cap being loose?

---- It started doing something weird today.... When i pull off of a light, and get to about 35-40 MPH... the back end will shudder for a quick moment... It feels like the back tires went over a speed bump that the front tires didnt hit. It did this about a dozen or so times today. But never did this prior to today....Any idea what could cause this? (i asked a guy at the parts store...he had no idea).

---Lastly, My center console (the Ebrake and Shifter area) gets really warm while driving.... Is this normal? Should i be concerned?

oh....its 1989 ford mustang 5.0 GT Automatic

I can tell you that you need to fix the radiator cap. The whole system is presurized to raise the boiling point of the water. With the cap crack the pressure cannot build. Thus allowing the water to boil. If that dosent fix it there are more problems somewhere else in the cooling system. But replace that cap first!

The shifter area tends to get warm. I wouldnt worry about it.

I believe his overflow cap is cracked. You have nothing to worry about if the overflow cap is broken but if your talking about your radiator cap than you need to get that fixed asap. As for the rear end shuddering i have no idea hopefully someone else will. And as for the console yes mine also gets hot, its just the heat from the transmission making its way through the console

yea....its the overflow cap...My radiator cap is fine. But the overflow cap (the black plastic cap on the overflow bottle) has a chunk missing, so it doesnt stay down if the liquid pushes against it...It just opens like a flap as the boiling water bubbles. I tried to get one from the parts store, but you have to go to ford for it...So im going to hit Upullit to get one tomorrow hopefully...i hope that will fix it.

The guy at baxter said my car might have too much water in it? How do i empty it if it has to much?

thats good that the heat on the console is normal... I kind of figured it was, but i wanted to be sure.

The first time it shuttered i thought i got rearended...But noone was behind me. But thats how much it does it... it feels like someone has ran into you (small fender bender type of way). Someone said maybe the Exhaust isnt fully bolted on, but i doubt that could be it (its to much to be the exhaust causing it). and a friend said that maybe the gear ratio (or something) in the back axle is messed up....(i have no idea if he even knows what he's talking about though.)

The liquid in the overflow tank should NEVER
be pushing against the cap. There is a cold
and a hot fluid level line on the tank which
must be followed. As the hot radiator liquid
enters the top of a FULL tank it will seem
like boiling.

Something is slipping in the rearend or the transmission.
This could be a major problem as it will most likely get
worse before it gets better (fixed).
Describe the simptoms to a trans specialist.

That heat might be coming from your exhaust, maybe they didnt put heatshields back. Have you done any burnouts recently or anything to abuse the rearend?

I havent done any burnouts in a couple weeks (and it never did this prior to two days ago).

As for the heat, it was like this before the exhaust (when i only had 1 and a half exhaust).... And i thought it was because i only had one muffler/tailpipe.....But it still does it..So i guess maybe it is just the heat from the normal use of the car.

the shuddering in your rearend you feel may be your torque converter. i had the same problem in my 95 gt and it was the tc.
