engine size
Hello, I am newbie this site. Here my name is Luke. By the way I am full deaf too. I have some problem understanding with size of Ford engine. The reason I am half of mechanic and still learning. I just want to do my first builder engine on my truck project. I have 1971 Ford Pickup shortbed. Plan to do hotrod, street/strip motor on it.
Been wonder about 302,308,331,347 or 460? I have 302 engine in it. It was all stock. I just want to figure out to make engine run around 400-450 hp. What the stroker best I could to make it with my 302? If you know about this what the best for my truck to run fast as street/strip.
I been so confused with engine size there is so many different horsepower rating. Can you give me some good idea. and Wise money. I might run transmission auto which is stronger c-4 or c-6 with 3 speed or should I stick with AOD?
Hope you understand with my grammar due deaf have some problem. Just want remind you before you able to read. If yall have any problem understanding. Feel free to ask me. I will try my best to explain clear.
Hope hear from you soon!

RE: engine size
How heavy is the truck? To get 400-450 out of a 302 for use in a heavy vehicle like a truck, you'd most likely need to go with a 347(302 with a stroker kit). You'll need the longer stroke and larger displacement of a 347 to produce the torque at lower rpm to make a truck perform well. That'd prolly be the easiest/cheapest way since you already have a 302 block. If it's a lighter weight truck then you could build a 331 stroker, it'll still make the power to move the truck well, but 331's generally last longer than 347's, which may or may not matter to you depending on how many miles you want to get out of the engine.

Maybe stick with 331? Truck is light its f100 pickup. Anyway plan to bore the block and get rotating assembly.. SO next transmission which one should I get it. I plan to put 4.10 on mustang 8.8 axle...

I think 5 speed kinda expensive maybe I just do c-4 or a0d? run with manuel shift and high stall converter 3000k?
What best heads? Eldbrock, Gt40 I think alum heads is best making more power. What best size cam?

RE: engine size
id go with a C-4 with a 3spd. the 3550 tranny isnt made anymore. if u wanted manual ud have to go wit the TKO 500 or 600. id stick wit auto though if its gonna be a track car.
As far as heads...there are so many alum. heads out there for the 302 motor. if funds allow u can get a set of Brodix heads or AFR's. edelbrock and Dart heads r good. If you're building on a budget I'd go with a set of GT-40 alum. heads. good bang for your buck HP.

if you use the truck on the street lots...... 4:10 and a 3k stall will shorten engine life.....high revs all the time.....
