Default 302 or 351w?

I also posted this in the Classic Mustangs sub forum, not knowing for sure where it would be best posted.

I have a 351w block, I'm not sure what it came out of and the best I can find out about it is, it's from the mid 70s truck or work van. I also have a 302 block out of a 71 fastback. I was wondering which block would be the best way to go to make around 350-400 hp and the option to run a lot of N20 occasionally at the track. I hope to get in the high 10s to low 11s... But yet i want it to be some what streetable for weekend cruises. Also, I know the max HP for a 351w is between 700-800hp...But what is the max you should push a 302 at?

Thanks a lot and looking forward to getting to know you guys.

Cory

get a 351w and stroke it ,,cause an extra 49 cubes is nothing to write home about,,,heres my 408..you can pull 2 plug wires and still have a 306..

Stroke kits seem to start at 1200, and i still have to rebuild the rest of the motor. I would like to have the motor done for about 3 grand total.

so keep the stock shortblock and just re-ring it get some new rods and machine all the parts, then get a good set of heads and intake and carb

You can make more HP per dollar with the 351 IMO. You will already have a 49 cubic inch difference.
Add some higher compression, good heads, intake, cam and exhaust and that 351 will scream.
The 351 has a longer stroke and will make more low-end torque than the 302(all things being equal)
I'm not saying 302 can't make HP because we all know they can.
If you're planning on a stroker motor then the 351 is definatly the way to go.

what will this be used for? i am asking this because it effects the cam you buy, which effects the heads and intake you buy.

351 is the way to go no matter what. parts arent much, if any more expensive. basically ur gettin free hp. if you get an edelbrock victor jr package with a stroker you can be running 500 NA hp very easily, more like 550. that should cost right around $3k, maybe a tad more.

the car will be a weekend driver, I want to put down very impressive track times 10.5-11.0. But i want to be able to take it on the streets and have some fun....so if I have to sacrifice a little hp and just spray more at the track thats fine. That kit you were talking about sounds like it's something I could do....could you show me links on where to get it, and whats the best way to stroke it? A kit or just buy the parts? Could you please give me purchase information on that as well?

Thanks

www.coasthigh.com - stroker kit. i would suggest the 408 or 427. the 427 has a very long stroke, so it wont rev as much. but it will make TONS of torque.

www.edelbrock.com - look for the victor jr heads and intake.

www.summitracing - one of the best places to buy edelbrock stuff, or anything for that matter.

the best bet for the cam is to get the cam custom ground. there are many shops that can do that. i have no experience with any companies, so im not going to suggest anything.
