Automatic ball shifter installation (Help!)
I got my new UPR automatic shifter out of the package today and dicided to put it on, I am following the instructions..... set the parking brake, put the car into 1st gear, and take out the set screw, all is going good. I get to step 3 and it sais, "After you remove the set screw, push in the selecter button and pull back on the shifter. It will come off".
My problem is..... It wont come off, I pulled on it so hard the actual bar going down to the transmission poped out a little and it then wouldnt go into first gear or park. I had to bang on it and jam it back down ther for it to work agian. [:@]
It like I never even took out the screw that is suppose to hold the shifter on.
What am I doing wrong?
After that I dicided to put it back before I messed anything up.
I have an 04 if that matters.

The tiny allen screw is the only one that holds the factory tee-**** in place. The trick to getting it off is to pull up CAREFULLY and twist clockwise/counter-clockwise. I say carefully because the overdrive switch wires (two conductors, VERY VERY fine gauge) can be easily snapped if you yank the **** off with too much gusto. There is also a thin plastic sleeve that covers the steel tube that the **** is connected to and it will slide off, too.
So, get back out to the garage and give it another try. And when you tighten the screw to hold the new **** on, do not over tighten it or you will crush the steel tube (and then you will have to replace the whole shifter mechanism, $$$).

I'll try it again tomorrow and let everyone know how it goes.
I tried it again today, and twisting it didnt do ****. I swear this thing is super glued on, it wont even budge.
Here's some pic1s I took, I moved that plastic sleeve downt so I could actually see what I am working with.
Any other advice on how to get thisPOS shifteroff would be great.
Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to help.

OK, now I'm thinking that the OD switch wires are not slack enough to let you pull the tee-**** off. Remove the trim bezel (it pulls straight up, be careful with it or you'll break off the pins that hold the metal spring clips). You have to feel your way along the OD switch wire and find the connector. Disconnect it at that joint. I don't recall the details but I think you need to lift the tab on one side to clear the locking 'hump' on the other. As a last resort, you can unbolt the shifter mechanism (4 bolts; be careful not to lose the clip-on nuts!) and that will give more slack in the wire to get it disconnected. Then, you'd have to bolt the shifter mechanism back in place and try to remove the tee-****. You're pushing the button in while twisting and pulling, right?
If that doesn't work, I suggest calling UPR and getting some "professional help", lol.

I've had mine for about 2yrs now & when I did mine I took off the trim , then unbolted the piece w/ PRND21 on it(I wanted to put the wires back in same location) . the o/d wires go down under & around the shift linkage & the connector is back towards the cup holder , you will need to disconnect that before the shiftknob will come off . I may have even unbolted my console to move it back some for more room . I also trimmed the shifter boot about 1/2"-1" so it wouldn't interfere w/ the linkage .
nyuk98gt : hey Chris , I see another PRP user has found this site . Welcome .

Thanks from a MustangForums noob! I love Advantage and tweaking the tune although the missus sometimes gets a little ticked that I am either in the garage or in front of the computer, lol. That's a fine looking ride you have there, btw.
