Hey guys, i know absolutely nothing about cars. =X
My 98 GT, took a dive. and now i need a new engine. But, i need to find out if its even worth droping a new one in there. Because we've already spent about 6 or 7 grand on the car.
Everything on that car is in good condition , except for the shocks. and the vynle top needs to be replaced. It has leather interrior , new brakes and tires.
A mechanic quoted us about 35 to 4 hundreed for the engine and installiation. Ford wanted 55, anyway im pretty sure its not worth putting a new engine in it. So my question is what could i get for the car, in its current condition....
=\
PS. im only 17

your prices make no sense, so ima guess 3500-4000? and ford wants 5500?
you can find a good shape 4.6l 2v PI motor for a grand or less and install that yourself in a day...then sell the running car for whatever if thats your game plan. you wont get anything for a 98gt with a blown motor and a thousand dollar top that needs to be replaced. you might get 500$ for someone that wants a donor car for a 4.6 swap to a v6 thats about it.
if you dont wanna spend the money and get the car fixed, tear it down and part it out.

Id swap the engine out for a used one and continue to drive it. Then maybe save some cash, sell it, and buy another stang!
worst case would be sell as is... and get a cheap car until u save enough to buy another stang =(

i cant install **** on cars. and my dad doesnt want to do it.
the prices make sense. the mechanic quoted us, at 3,500 to 4,000 for the job and motor.
ford wants to do it for 5,500.
he doesn't want to install another used engine, becuase if it breaks down again, thats wasted money. and further ourselves into a hole, with a car.

I'd keep the car for a while and keep looking around for a cheap used motor that would fit in a stang. Then I'd sell it. Yo won't get **** if it has a blown motor even if you put 6K in already! Good luck man

I found an 01 4.6 out of a GT with 17k miles on it for $1160 out the door. Did the swap with a buddy. Mechanic quoted me $750 for the install if he did it.
Putting a used engine in there, to me, isn't a dumb thing like your dad said. Finding a used engine, putting it in or paying to have it put in will net you more money than trying to sell a GT with a blown motor.
