Default Tachometer question

Sorry if this is a repost, but search feature wasnt working for me. I bought an aftermarket tach with a shift light, and heard you may need a tach driver because of the voltage and you cant splice 8 seperate coil pack's wiring. How does it hook up, it has four wires coming off of it, obviously one for ground, one 12 volt..Is there a certain trick to it or is it pretty simple, or does it need a tach driver? Thanks guys
