Default Aircraft Landing Lights on a car

Has anyone had experience with ACL's? In a muscle magazine i saw a black 73 Mustang Grande and the guy said he used to pick up ACLs from a local plane shop and they lit up roads like daylight. Concidentally i also have a 73 grande, and after reading the article I'm considering them. But info on the combo is limited. So anyone have experience? (cost, heat, compatability, etc.) thanks

I'm not sure about cost and all those but I do fly small planes and they are definately bright, at least as bright as driving with your high beams on, if not brighter. That said, they may be illegal for road usein the same manner that those driving lights you see on off-road jeeps and trucks are.

Ofcourse it's illegal. I believe in NY they state that any modification to external lightning on a vehicle is illegal, such a crock. Also removing any functioning cats is illegal,[sm=oopssign.gif]

I work on aircraft and the brightness alone would be a hazard to other drivers, not to mention the heat they produce. Also the aircraft I work on run either a 114 ac current or 27 volts dc. I would look cool becuase of how clear they are but you would not be able to drive with them on.

I know they are really bright and dangerous to others. If I do use them they would be for desolate areas and i would do some type of oncoming shielding, such as a cap like a droopy eyelid. I'm just a bit of a person that prefers isolation if I'm with a girlfriend. I'm in jersey and only 15, so most likely by time i drive they'll make bright enough standard lights. i just thought it would be cool. also they arent necessarily for only driving. from what I've found they are great for lighting up fields, scenes etc. Basically a nice thing to have if i need em

Off road lights are a lot brighter and they only use 12 volts instead of 27, I've used them before during the night when pulling people out of the mud and they were great.

Yeah you could probably pick up a set of KC Daylighters or something like that for cheaper than aircraft lights. They might look sort of funny on a mustang though, they are meant for jeeps and off-road vehicles.Aircraft parts tend to be way more expensive due to how regulated the aviation industry is and the amount of testing parts have to go through before they are allowed to beinstalled on aircraft.

i was planning on either replacing the in-grill hi beams on my '69 or hangin them off the bumper of the 73, but after this thread if anything I'll do that with offroad lights. Thanks. Oh and when i looked them up cheap ACLs range from $25 to $115 each, so being they arent for landing a plane i wouldnt need top end ones. I also assume the guy in the article installed them when they were more efficient than regulars. anyway thanks again
