Default distributor problems

hey check it out i am having trouble with my 1990 4 cylinder, i was driving and it just stopped working. it was making a whinning sound when i went to start it and my enging had no spark. but my plugs and wires were like nine months old. so i replaced my distributor cap and rotor. still nothing happened. then i replaced my coil.....nothing still. so finally i figured that it was my modual. nothing happened still but i was creating spark. so my friend who was helping me that knows about 100 times more then me about cars took may cap off and had me crank the engine and found that my rotor wasnt even turning. it looked as though it would catch for a second and then let go of the rotor and continue not working. i think i might have to replace the gear or something in my engine but i dont even know where to start. the distributor runs around 80-90 bucks and is spent almost 80 on the modual, the cap, the coil, and the rotor. so it sounds like you might be having the same problems as i am or something close to it.
