Default Anti theft deterant

Hey guys how does these things work in our cars? My old lady drives a 2000 cavalier and she used the button to lock her doors and it made the beep. I forgot my smokes in her car so i went to get them and i left the window down anyways, so i reached in and opened to door from the inside. So it started alarming and i sat in there and had a smoke while it was alarming. ( I didnt even have the keys to turn it off )

I tried this with my 02 gt and nothing happened. What gives? Why does a crapalier have this protection but not a stang?

Our anti theft is less about getting into the car, and more about starting the car. Your car won't start without the specifically coded key for that vehicle. That's why duplicate keys cost so much, because a chip is built into the key that coordinates with the engine and allows that key to start the engine.

My 95' goes creazy if it gets intimidated by a car with louder exhaust!

I dont have the chip because my car is older so its more geared to physical contact and vibration. If you want the best of both worlds then just get the Viper alarm with the pager, its expensive but worth it. It pages you if something happens with you car.

I know im gettin a Viper.

95' V6 stang with 03' V8 32V mach1 engine with Viper Alarm.... I think my car might just be a little corn-fuzed! [&:]

Yea i understand the whole chip in the key thing but what about the fake alarm? Is that all it is, is a fake alarm?

I'm assuming by fake alarm you mean the honk/chirp the horn does when you hit the lock button twice? Sorry, I misunderstood. From the manual, all that honk does is let you know that the doors are locked. If you hear two honks, one of your doors is ajar, and not locked. It's not an alarm of any kind. The panic alarm is a kind of alarm, but only good if you're watching your car get robbed and people nearby care that it's honking.

well, for my mustang, if the alarm is on, and the doors unlocked, when i got in it started beepin like mad, so maybe just you thought your mustang was alarmed when it wasnt. for me, one beep is un-alarmed and two beeps is alarmed

anyways, alarms still dont do much especcially if u got a convertible :P cuz all u need is a knife and know how to hotwire the car.

I'm actually a hot-wiring maniac, and can tell you that it's harder to hotwire 96' mustang than almost any car I've ever tried. I have a 96 GT convertible, and was worried about someone doing just that, so I planned to rig a ignition disable system. HOWEVER! I tied the positive 12v to the ignition, and touched another constant to the starter and NOTHING. There is actually a RESISTENCE meter in the starter sensor at the steering column that measures the resistence between the actual cable from the mounting and the starter. What does this mean? It means that if you splice the starter motor wire, you better have the exact gague of 12v wire pump in that shot of electricity or the starter won't budge. And the clincher: There is no wire with the starter wire's gague in the column. I was able to hot wire it by running a lead directly from the battery. Of course, without reading the PATS chip, the car died. Lesson: Even hotwiring the car won't help you without the PATS key.

However, folks, if you want to make extra PATS (passive anti theft system) keys for about $12, let me know. I figured out a way to allow you to program the keys yourself, instead of taking them to the dealer.

Good luck!

Yeah, good luck hot wiring mine as well. I was told if any other key was put into my ignition on the cars with the coded key, that the car will nto start unless someone from the dealership can fix the computer. Is this true? I know when hubby had the ranger and his sister had an escort I was always afraid to put the wrong key into the ignition cuz of that rumor.

This is very true. This is called the PATS system. (see my last post). What it is is essentially a little resistor placed in the plastic of your key that responds on a particular frequency to a sensor mounted on the steering column when you try to crank the car up. If that sensor doesn't receive the right response from the resistor on the key, the fuel lines are shut off.

If you want to make duplicate keys, you are told to go to the dealer or to a special locksmith that can actually recode the keys with the proper frequency. This is not necessary. You can get a blank key with an unprogramed resistor from eBay for about $8, and you can get it cut, and then program it yourself. The dealer and the locksmith will charge you over $100 for an easy thing to do. If you're interested, see one of my previous posts on how to do this yourself.
