RE: is it worth it
I sold my 89 GT with 150K for 1800$. It looked
a lot better that this 4 banger.
I had a lot of offers for around $1000 but finally found
a girl that wanted it.
My guess is that ford will be a money pit. I doubt it has
72K.
The GT has a lot heavyer duty suspension.
Alloy wheels etc.
If you need an everyday driver that you can
walk away from when the bill$ start coming
in. Offer him $500 - he will take it.

RE: is it worth it
It's a bit tough to say if it is or isn't worth that without actually seeing it, driving it, etc.
As far as things to look for: check the front floor (esp driver side for some reason) for any rust. If the windshield leaks it pools there and causes rust. I had an '88 4 cyl and a '92 V8 and both had that problem. Also since the car is older, the bushings can go bad. The rear control armsmay be noticable as a dull thud just as you start toaccelerate.
Also ask if any history is known about maint, in particular timing belt. It doesn't ruin the motor if it goes, but it's a pain if you get stuck and have to tow the car. Happened twice on my '88. The belt is only about $15 but will cost $200-$300 to have changed if you can't do it.
The biggest thing is to ask yourself why you want that car. Are you looking for basic transportation, like the Mustang look, want a project, etc. Then assess that car based on that info.
Good luck!
