Rear End Clunk

Rear End Clunk
Recently I noticed a clunk that seems to be coming from the right rear suspension on my 01 Bullitt. It usually happens when taking off in first gear and shifting to second but only when you get on it a little. If i take off slow there is nothing. What could this be? I though maybe the pinion angle could make a noise like this but im not really sure, it seems like the suspension. Ive tried tightening down the bolts for everything back there but it hasnt really changed. thoughts?

RE: Rear End Clunk
AH, i didnt even think about that. I will definitely check that. Is there an easy or best way to do that? should i be able to just crawl under and see. I think im gonna make a list of things i can check, becuase i have to bring my car to my parents house to work on it.
Would the tranny mounts cause the pinion angle to change and clunk? or would the tranny be what is actually making the noise im hearing?

RE: Rear End Clunk
my top 3 guess's
U-Joint
Tranny Mount
Upper Control Arm
*I have never heard anything inside the "chunk" make a noise like you describe. The rear chunk usually makes a grind, roar, whine or squeek kind of noise if there is a problem.

RE: Rear End Clunk
From someone who just had his whole rear end rebuilt because of a rear end "clunk or chunk." Is it a loud noise that happens once every so often, but not continually, right? Sounds like your ring and pinion are toast. When that happens, they do not mesh correctly and will thunk against each other as power is transferred. Think of it this way, take both of your hands and hold the out but where your palms are where you can see them. Now put your fingers together like the teeth of gears, now move them up and down. This simulates what your gears are most likley doing, they are trying to transfer power, but kinda bounce off of each other and then engage. New ring and pinion kit is 240 dollars, that will include the gears and everything. But I would not reccomend installing it yourself. They have to be set to very specific tolerances, mine was rebuilt by a previous owner less than a few years ago and had to be replaced 2 days ago because it was not set up properly. I just blew 2000 dollars and had the whole thing rebuilt and beefed up with moser axles, a clutchless detroit trac loc, and 3.73 gears. All with new bearings, shims, and so forth. I got a 2 year warranty on it too. Good Luck!
