Default what makes an exhaust louder?

I have a great set up...

pacesetter xpipe
flowmaster catback 40.

and i want to go for a louder sound. I hear other mustangs but there just loud, i want to be LOUD and keep that golden musclecar sound at the same time. So what makes it loud? is it the x-pipe? because i refuse to change out my flowmaster that i love so much. If i cant make it louder than its fine but you can never go wrong with a bit louder.

00" GT

Stuff you might already know but ill go over it anyway...

With Flowmasters, there are 3 chamber mufflers, 2 chambers, and a single chamber. A 1 chamber is loudest but is a 'racing-only' muffler. The 2 chamber is probably the most popular of the three and the rumble is always there. A 3 chamber is quieter at low speeds but once you mash the gas itll get louder. I dont know what the other brands offer.

For overall loudness, a larger exhaust will be louder as it allows more flow thru it, more flow, more noise. Stock systems are too restrictive imo. A 2 1/2" setup is good. Anything 3" and larger is usually a waste on most cars.

An aftermarket H-pipe with cats is less restrictive than stock also. An H-pipe without cats is even better. Itll be louder. Not sure about H vs. X tho. I always hear the biggest difference is torque, but i dont know first-hand as ive always had an H-pipe with cats (visual emissions check). Gutting the cats will work to but id leave that to someone whos good with a welder. I may do just that eventually.

If you want to spend the cash get some electric cutouts, sure beats having to crawl under the 'stang to open and close them. Just flick a switch and there ya go, a louder exhaust. Passing a cop? Flick the switch again. Slick.

I wouldnt limit myself to just Flowmasters if i were you as there are lots of mufflers out there with lots of combinations to try out. Some setups are loud while others just rumble more. The best thing would be to check out any all-Ford or Mustang shows you can. Ask them to fire it up and listen, take notes of what they have and take it from there.

I've heard that H pipes give more of a hot rod sound and x pipe's give a raspy sound. Not sure about that myself personaly.

Smile loud exhaust

the best way to increase exhaust sound level while retaining mufflers is to gut the cats. that 'classic' sound comes from cars that did'nt have cats. huge difference in sound, only downfall is if you have to take a sniffer/im240 emmissions test. best to check local laws on emmissions. addermk2 would tell you to add smoked headlamp covers.

A cut-out is usually some sort of a Y pipe installed in your system. One side of the Y goes to your standard mufflers etc exhaust. The other side of the Y is usually capped off with a blocking plate, but once you unblock the plate like at a dragstrip, the exhaust goes straight out, no muffler at all
