AOD input shaft
i was changing transmissions... got an 88 or 89 AOD but the input shaft is sticking out about 3/4 of an inch or so. we cant get it to go in all the way so the isnt room for the flywheel. is the transmission wrong or busted?

Im confused.
How is the shaft interfering with the flywheel? Flywheels have a hole in the center. Sounds like maybe you didnt slide the converter in far enough? With a converter not on all the way, the flywheel will be closer to the engine and will keep the transmission from bolting up properly. Is it a new converter? New converters can be a little tight. If thats the problem, check the shaft or converter for any burrs and try the converter again. You might have to turn it some and push a few times.

ok...
you might be right first of all
here's what im going on
we cant get the tranny to bolt to the engine right. the 2 transmissions look exactly the same except the the good (new) one has an input shaft that is about one inch longer than the bad (old) one. as far as we can tell the converter is going all the way in, as is the input shaft but it still wont bolt up.
so i guess what i need to know is
1. does the difference in input shafts matter if we keep the converters with their original transmissions (use the new converter, not the old one)?
2. if not how do you swap the shafts, and if i did that would i need to use the old converter?
just for the record, transmission work is kinda new for me
