So are synthetic oil really worth it? How do they differ from regular oils? Are they really worth the money?

Synthetics make all the difference upon start-up over conventional oils.

Anyone who says otherwise has no clue what they are talking about. Best regular maitnance you can do to your car is changing to synthetic oil.

I'll probably be the only one but I don't think they are worth the money for a water cooled V8 engine. It is true that synthetic oil can take more abuse than conventional oil but for everyday driving my opinion is that it isn't needed. You may feel better about putting it in but I think that's as far as it goes. The biggest difference is that the synthetics don't have the parafins that are found in conventional oils. I've only used conventional oil and have never had any oil associated problems.

Some reading below I think you will find interesting. As far as synthetics go, do it! Everything about them is superior for the performance and longevity of your engine. If I am not mistaken, I believe Mobil 1 is now the official oil of NASCAR.

I love synthetic's oils. I used it in my honda civic and the motor lasted well over 200k. I beat that car up daliy and i never had trouble with it. When I had the timing belt replaced at 100k and again at 200k the heads looked like they were brand new. The mechanic thought that i had put new heads on and was amazed by it. No leaks, no drips, no errors. After I rebuild the motor in my 88 lx 50 i'm going to use synthetic's. It may be alittle more but in the long run you'll be happier. and you can also go longer without having to change your oil. I would go like 5k or 6k before changing my oil. I could have gone longer but never did.

Never use additives. There are much more differences between conventional oils and synthetic oils than viscosity, have you ever researched the matter? Synthetics leave a coating on all rotating parts, which conventional oil is known to NOT do. Idling and start-up are the most damaging times for your motor, which is why the benefits of using synthetic oils far exceed conventional oil.
