Default What does it take to lift the wheels?

Basically I want to know this. What does it take to be able to wheelie? I know you need the power and suspension, but what kind? My first question is, what kind of suspension do you need? Parts? The other question is, even if the suspension meets a "wheelie" requirement, what is typically the MINIMUM hp/trq you would also need to lift the wheels? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I know tires play a roll too, but tires are pretty obvious to figure out what to get.

Well as of right now, it's strictly for humors sake. In a few years (when I have my bach degree and a better paying job) I was gonna build a "streetable" car that could lift the front end up just a few inches. (enough to clearly visibly see). The only thing out of everything you said I would probably like to keep would DEFINITELY be the wheels (which would be 18x9 front, 18x10 rear) and most likely the hood.

lighten up the front, get some insanely good hooking tires, and drag suspension setup, and more torque + hp wont hurt

Lol. Not a typical question. As far as on the street? Have fun trying. U can get insanely sticky slicks and still have trouble hooking up on the street. But taking it to the dragstrip is a diff story. Slicks on the strip will help accomplish that. I drag race and run 700+ hp and my car will just blow the tires off on the street. They are obviously slicks but I still can't get no traction.

If you have little desire to go fast and just want to jerk the front wheels. A Mustang is a great place to start. Since it's a small short car with a light engine.

Trying this with a truck or a big car like a Torino, Charger or Impala would alot harder.

Without being too critical. You could probably get a 12 sec Mustang to hang the hoops but a 10 second Charger would just stretch the shocks (not including the 70 from Fast and Furious).

Forget about building horsepower. Concentrate on torque, high rpm launch, racing clutch or transbrake, traction, spool and lightweight front end components.

My Grand National would pull the wheels only about 8 inches and I was running low 10's. Its all about the suspension, and most importantly the DRIVER.

Well basically it would have to be street legal..and this includes the tires. But after reading everything you all have said, here's the funny thing...I saw a 70 Chevelle a few years ago take off hard from a stop light and I watched him actually lift the wheels. It wasn't a real lot..I would have to guess maybe 2". But trust me, they definitely left the ground. He didn't have slicks either. Speculate..

Street legal is the catch.
Slicks and suspension would be the easiest way to pull them. But you can't run slicks on the street....not that a street would have enough prep to hook well anyway.

That being said, my old 347 fox would pull the wheels from time to time on a well warmed up street.
