Default Matching #'s ?

I have a 65 fastback that I just started the restoration on. How do I find out if it has matching #'s or not?

the vin# is where you can find out most of the info. it will give you color, gear ratio, and other stuff. also look on the block and see if the engine has the numbers embossed in it. it will also tell you what it came out of. i am a gm person and this is how to find out on a gm. good luck. and you could just call your local dealer and that would be the easiest way!!!

They really dont have matching numbers. You can get the date codes off things like the heads and block that will tell you when they were made but thats about it. The original engine in my 68 came with a 302 block, they used them when they ran out of 289 blocks. So it really doesnt matter as long as it's the correct year if you're doing a full restoration.

yeah, mustangs arent really "Matching numbers" like GM cars. The GM cars had the serial number stamped into the block and other parts that matched the serial number in the VIN. mustangs just have date codes that would match with build dates and everything. like the engine date code is usually a month or 2 before the build date of the car etc. That is what you have to look for with the mustangs, parts that are supposed to be on the car. Your VIN number and trim tag will tell you that.

Check out this site.. I hope it helps a bit.. g/l Ok, here's the scoop. 65-66 mustang cars have the vin # stamped on the left front fender apron and the right front fender rear apron. In addition there is supposed to be a door tag on the left door above the door latch. The engine tag this will give you engine displacment and date. The trans also has a tag for type and date. I also think there is some other info there. the third tag is on the rearend this will give you gear ratio and date. if you are a lucky one, you could have a build sheet under the dash or under carpet.
