When I bought my Mustang the clutch cable was routed close to the long tube headers. The previous owner wrapped the header in just that one spot to protect the clutch cable from heat.

I've since rerouted the cable away from the header tube and removed the wrap. You will never guess, I have a perfect pair of headers rusted in one tiny section.

 

do it then and see what happens.

even a single layer will still hold moisture. dont be stupid.....
