Default Whining coming from shifter or tranny?

Hi, I just bought a 2004 Mach 1 with 5000 miles on it. In 2nd gear through 5, I hear a slight whining noise that gets higher as speed increases. If I let off the gas, the noise goes away. If I hold the shifter against the gate while in gear, the noise gets slightly louder.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I'm hoping that's all it is. The shifter **** looks like one from a terminator, so at the very least, that part isn't stock. Not sure about the actual shifter though without lifting some screws and taking a look.

dude checkin it out is simple. the plastic peice that is around the shifter boot and has the cigarette lighter plug pops right offthe lighter will have to be unplugged from behind. and you should be able to look right at the shifter arm. if it looks plain and black its probubly stock but if its chrome/silver or a "brass" type of color its not.. a lot of ppl switch those out for a steeda triax or the pro-5.0 shifter

Thanks, I'll take a look at it this week when I have some time to play with it. I test drove a GT with a triax shifter and mine feels nothing like it. For $180, I'll definitely be throwing one in some day.

yeah the triax is sweet. i got one about a month ago. the height is adjustable and the ford shift **** really feels best with it i think. the pro 5 0 has a patent on its design though. the 2nd to third gear shift is supposed to be different so it never misses, the triax just has a stiffer spring. but i drag race some weekend and have really liked it. no third gear misses yet.

a terminator is a 6 speed as opposed to the 5 speed in the machs, so that wouldn't make much sense.

True, but they do make a 5spd 03-04 Cobra design shifter ****.
