Default 4R70W questions

Recently I have bought a 97 Cougar XR-7 with the 4.6 mustang engine of the same year and the 4R70W transmission. I knew the transmission had a problem and could need a rebuild, when the car is in(not shifting) third gear the trans rumbles and shakes the car or driveline a little bit with a faint harsh noise. It's not the fluid since I recently flushed and put new trans fluid in, I think the gear/trans is going.
Questions:
1. What is the usual cost of a 4r70w rebuild?
2. What does it sound like? (rebuild time?)
3. How long does the average 4r70w trans last before needing a rebuild? (my car has about 60k miles and has had no trans rebuild or engine rebuild)

Thanks for any help.

i have a 1997 Thunderbird and the clutches in the trans went out 2 weeks after i bought it. ( i had it coming i paid $700) but i pulled the trans on the ground and it took about 2 weekends plus rebuild time since it was my first time ever doing a trans and the fact that it was on the ground. too much time? maybe...
