Hey guys I havent been on in a while but im back. I have a 88 5.0 with a tremec transmission (I think). Saturday I was getting onto an on-ramp. I was in 2nd gear and gave it some gas it started sliding sideways a little, I let off the gas pushed in the clutch and shifted easy into 3rd let out on the clutch and gave it a little gas in 3rd. I didnt jam the gears or anything I shifted easy. Okay so I got on the interstate and pushed in the clutch to shift to 4th and it wouldnt come out of 3rd. The clutch disengages the transmission but it will not come out of 3rd gear. I had to drive the whole way home in 3rd gear. Does anyone know what this might be or how to fix it?

the hard shift to second could have bent ur shift linkage. check your shift linkage to make sure it looks normal

Well see I didnt hard shift to second I came out of first very easy I didnt even get into it at all in first. I already had it in second and then just gave it some gas. The thing is there is no linkage on the outside. The shifter goes straight into the box on top of the transmission.

It sounds like the engagement hub is stuck (internal problem), hate to tell ya you gotta yank the trans man. And if it is a tremec call them up and see what it would take to get it rebuilt. It might just be cheaper to get a T-5 trans.

Hey guys thanks for the help you've given so far any more info would be great. Me and dad pulled the shifter off last night and found that its not in the shifter its inside the trans (as far as we know). It is a tremec I saw that on the side of the shift box. I just dont know much about transmissions when we pulled the shifter off we pushed on the square piece of metal that the shifter ball goes down into and it was still jammed in third. So any more info guys?

Sounds like your going to need to tear down the trans to get at the problem anyway? Try starting the car, since it is always in gear try (without applying the gas and handbrake engaged) releasing the clutch suddenly, engine will stall. Try this a few times, see if it breaks loose. Could be your synchro bearing has frozen????
