Default What is this?

I'm having an interesting time with my 92 5.0. Had to have transmission reconditioned last week. This week engine has started missing a beat. While checking spark plug leads last night I brushed against a rubber pipe to left of engine block and whoa, a fitting between it and a metal pipe broke! Lots of corrosion, where there is lots of rust particles I am guessing there was a length of steel piping as part of the fitting.

I have to get a new fitting and probably a new pipe, but I don't know what it is! It appears to be some kind of a valve, maybe a thermostat? I attach a photo of my hand holding the broken part. Can any kind soul tell me what this is so I can order a replacement?
