Default Carb suggestions?

New to this forum, Have a 68 Fastback with a 289, just rebuilt with a 302 crank, roller rockers, cam, heads ported and polished, moving from a factory 2 bbl to a 4. Getting an Edelbrock dual plane intake and looking for suggestions on a new carb. Want a nice driver with some punch but with a decent idle is my goal.

What are folks running that they are happy with?

Quick Fuel if you are actually going to tune it completely.

I went from a 2v to a 4v with a basic Holley 4160 600CFM. Took some tinkering/tuning but she is running pretty dang good. Next time I upgrade I will probably look at the Street Avengers as I keep hearing they are a great all around carb that is easy to tune.

What transmission? Generally vacuum secondaries are more automatic friendly, and generally considered a good street carb. Racers seem to want mechanical secondaries... Not sure about all the reasons why, but 1 is that second set of barrels opens up just a bit faster on the mechs.

Are you going to take the car to the drag strip a LOT? If not, get vaccum secondaries

I am using a vacuum sec Holley 4160 with mine and I have an SROD 4 speed which is very similar to the top loader. It is working good for me! That said I only chose this set up because they guy I bought my intake off of threw it in for free.

Mechanical is fine with a manual, even on the street. The secondaries won't open unless you bury your foot in the accelerator, so you only run on the 2 front barrels all the time. With a vacuum under part throttle moderate load acceleration the secondaries will sometimes open. And tuning a mechanical for throttle response is easier, since you have a second accelerator pump. Sometimes on a vacuum you have to slow the secondaries opening to prevent a bog and cost yourself a bit of performance.
