Windshield wiper randomly turns on and off
Hey everyone,
I have a '99 V6 3.8L Mustang. My windshield wipers like to just randomly come on for a couple ticks and then shut off. There doesn't seem to be any particular cause for it. If i'm just cruising it will sometimes happen. If I'm just cleaning her inside the garage with just the radio on it can happen.
What should I be looking for to fix this? Thanks.

+1. And, yes, by all means you should get it fixed sooner than later before you end up with an electrical fire. It's always a possibility with any type of short.
Do you have a tilt steering wheel? I found my wiring harness running up the column to the cruise & wiper controls was being stretched at the connector as I tilted my column. Before you go expense a switch remove your uppper and lower cover and make sure you have sufficient slack in the column wiring. I simply repositioned the wiring connector and eliminated the problem.

Thanks for the help, everyone.
I have the same issue on my 12' gt500, windshield wiper and fluid just sprays for no reason, I was wondering if you had any luck with fixing yours? Now it just dont work unless I turn it on to the last mode all of the other modes dont work and when i press it for the fluid, nothing happens. Ill take any information on what to check out first before i end up buying a new motor for it. I know they have to move my steering wheel area for them to install my headers.
Can also be the park landing zone in the motor is dirty, the contacts are dirty or
are loosing tension. I had this happen in another car, the motor got dirt in it
and the copper landing strip the leaf contacts hit to know when to stop the
motor when the wipers are off, was all dirty. Contacts were also all dirty.
I had to replace the motor...
Every time I would hit a bump, the wipers would make a sweep, then stop.
Bass thud, same thing.. The bumps and vibrations caused one or both
of the leaf contacts to lift off the copper strip, thus the motor would run
to park position again... This is all integral in the motor...

I am having the same issue. I just replaced the multi-function switch and that seemed to help for a few days. Now I am back to square one with the wipers hanging on intermittent low when the MF Switch says wipers are off. The wiper fluid pump is no longer freaking out randomly, so perhaps the MF switch did help a bit. My next course of action is going to be checking and cleaning the electrical connections on the wiper motor and possibly the washer fluid pump. If anyone has any other ideas I am all ears. I would really like to get to the bottom of this. I'll be sure to update if anything changes.
Same with me. 2013 Mustang GT. I had disconnected the neg lead on battery cause I was going to polish a wiper scratch off the windshield. When I was done and put the neg cable back on, the wipers and washers came on even though switch was off. Replaced the turn signal stalk and made no difference. Now the wipers and washers come on randomly. Also checked fuses. Any ideas?
