Question Tachometer Problem

Hey everyone.
I have a 2007 V-6 with just over 12k miles.
A week ago, my tachometer started making a whirring/ticking sound on startup (similar to the sound the gauges make when you turn the key to accessory or when you shut off the engine -- only louder).
Now the tach works fine, and the only time I hear it is on startup.
Is it normal for a tachometer to become noisier as the car gets older, or is this a sign that the tach's getting ready to fail?
Thanks.
Greg

Keep an eye on it and take it in to the dealer before your warranty runs out. It doesn't sound good and when it goes, you will need to replace the entire cluster. It's a $500 item I believe. Had mine replaced under warranty and it's a sealed unit, nothing can be done to it at our level. Even Ford send them to a vendor to get them rebuilt.

Thanks Chronos.
My warranty is good 'til the end of January.
Just out of curiosity, how long did it take the dealership to replace the cluster? In other words, is it a fairly simple job?

Yea, the biggest problem is getting it in. They had to order it (not a normal stock item) and took two weeks to come in. Then, I went back early one morning and was out in about 30 min. Really simple job. I saw the cluster and it's one sealed unit with just one computer type connector in the back. The tech programs it and you are outta there. BTW I would suggest if you dont want to throw off your mileage a lot, try not to drive it much (or at all) in those two weeks. When they install it, they will program it with the mileage of when you went in initially.
