engine shut off on highway
I was driving on the Interstate and my 91 LX 2.3L shut off. Engine came on and tried to run a few times (without turning key), but then it shut off. The fuel pump does not come on with ignition and I have no spark from the coil packs (4 cyl. with 8 spark plugs on 2 coil packs). I am thinking the ignition control module. Any sugestions?
Check fuses and relays first. Then check the battery, make sure it has the proper voltage. A low battery can cause some weird, hard to explain, problems. Did the check engine light come on? Even if it didn't, I'd still check for codes. Most autoparts stores will check them for you for free (e.g. autozone, kragen/o'reily, pepboys etc). Start with the basics…
If the fuel pump doesn't turn on and you have no spark, then I would think the problem is somewhere else and most likely a problem somewhere in the power distribution system. Ranging from a wire short, blown fuses, bad relay, bad computer etc. Guessing and just throwing parts at the problem will just end up wasting your time and money. Its better to dive in and try to properly diagnose the problem.
Good luck...
