Default PERFORMANCE TUNE THAT IMPORTANT!? HELP.

Hey everyone, I need some feedback on what I should do. Here are my stats:

2005 Mustang GT (Automatic)
Non-Intercooled Vortech Supercharger
3:90 Gear Ratio

I did my first dyno test today and here are the results:

Max Power: 327.2 rwhp @ 6000 RPM
Max Torque: 299.8 @ 5500 RPM

(Vortech advertises 420hp at the flyweel.)

Here are the perameters the shop put into the Mustang Dynamometer:

Weight: 3,500 Lbs
HP @ 50 MPH: 11.50

Now: Alternative Auto Performance has a 2005 Mustang GT with the same MODs as mine, except they have 3:73 Gears whereas I have 3:90. They are advertising they hit 399.7 rwhp & 367 lbs or torque @ http://www.alternativeauto.com/water...tml#05gtupdate

Now their 399.7 rwhp was achieved at 6,800 RPM and my current Vortech tune will not allow my hp to go over 6,200 RPM. It looks like at 6,000 RPM they were at about 365 rwhp.

So I guess this demonstrates the importance of having a custom performance tune. The place that did the dyno test for me (Midstate Machine in Des Moines, IA) said that when their machine is rented out for custom tunes they usually see an increase in rwhp by anywhere from 60 - 80 hp. I guess I never realized that a performance tune could make that much difference. And if I can squeeze 70hp out of my baby through a performance tune, that would put me right at almost 400rwhp. They dyno shop also said that they normally expect to see the rwhp about 20% - 25% less than at the flywheel on automatics which seems consistant with my test. What do you all think?

The only problem: I CANT FIND ANYONE QUALIFIED IN MY AREA TO DO PERFORMANCE TUNE.
I live in Des Moines, Iowa: Anyone have any suggestions???

Suggestion #1 Come to Chicago, I know a shop that will tune your car and do a very good job. Make a weekend out of it and we can go to the track. Also keep in mind that a Mustang Dyno will read lower than a Dyno Jet.

No, you talking about a dyno tune. There are performance tunes, street tunes, low octane tunes, 1/4 mile tunes, tunes for specific track, etc, etc. The one you choose will probably be a compromise between street and strip. A tune on fuel injected vehicle is the process of mapping injection and ignition events to rpm and throttle position (aka engine load). Remember back in the days of carb you only had one position for amount of fuel you wanted and one postion for amount of timing advance you wanted, in fuel injected vehicle there isn't just one position for each, there are many positions, in a 10 by 10 map it would be 10 x 10 = 100 positions.

Not a big deal! People tuned their carbs for ages without a dyno, you can do same with your EFI, if it is an aftermarket unit. Check out this guide to get a basic idea. http://www.msefi.com/msinfo/manual/mtune.htm

You will want to seek professional help if you have ECC-IV or V, and it will cost you some. You can also contact a chip maker and give him your mods, that won't be as good as getting a custom tune on a dyno but it's way cheaper.

Difference between tuning with and without chassy dyno is pretty simple. Without dyno you usually rely on scientific equations and fuel ratio, with dyno you can see the actual power you are making.

Hey nice to see a fellow Iowan here lol, I live in Waterloo. I know, there aren't jack crap for preformance shops around us is there. In a couple weeks I'm taking my car to Finsih Line Performance in Naperville, ILL, it's on the west side of Chicago which is a lilttel more than 4 hours away for me and maybe another hour away for you. But I think it would be well worth taking your car their and have them tune it.

I might just do that...what would your buddy charge me? If you do not feel comfortable advertising that on the forums...email me at jon@vanwyk.net.

I don't know what he would charge but give him a call . His number is on his web site www.1320hp.com. Finish Line does good work as well but thier prices are a bit on the high side.

A custom tune will cost you 500 at least around here anyways and I'm sure its the same around there.Once they tune your car thou they will re tune it anytime for free if you upgrade anything or want a different tune,A tune is the single best mod you can do!Obviously cars aren't tuned for power from the factory, they are trying for good gas mileage and emissions so changing it will give you up wards of 50hp.A vortech tune is a conservative tune that works on anyones car,A custom one is for your mods and car

A custom tune is always better than the canned ones that come with the hand-held flashers and tuners...or better than you can download off the internet because every car is slightly different. Once you factor in a blower, you have to get a tune specific for your application. Either a dyno tune or a tuner can take your car, datalog, and create a custom tune for you.

I believe the intercooled version is what they (Vortech) are basing their 420HP on. Without the intercooler, I doubt you will get above 350-375hp. That is a guesstimate. Tunes on these new Mustangs seem to do amazing things.

i bought a diablosport chip that pretty much replaces the cars computer. you have to get it tuned, but ive heard it makes up to 90 additional horsepower with some intake and exhaust mods. (cold air, TB, catback) i havent installed mine yet but is a good alternative to a dyno tune.
