Default Just bought a Cobra.. I think

Hello, I'm new here and I just bought a 1997 mustang Cobra.</P>

How would I know if it's a Cobra or a dressed up GT? It has a big V8, five speed transmission, a Cobra on the side, and under the hood, the braking system, on the hydraulic part, there are lines that run to the power steering, I dont know why, perhaps someone does? </P>

Anyways, I don't know a lot about mustangs, but I know a good deal when I see one. Cobra or not, it was fast as heck with 115k miles and the price was right. If anyone knows of anything distinct that I could use to tell if it's a cobra or just a fancy gt I'd really appreciate it. </P>

P.S. I bought it as an investment, and will post pictures and whatnot in the for sale section if you all think anyone might be interested. I really appreciate everything. </P>

The reason for the lines from the brakes to the power steering is that the brake assist is called a hydroboost system....it uses hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump for the power brake assist rather than having a booster ran off engine vacuum

If you really want to know if it is a real cobra, just fax your vin number to SVT, you can find the number on ford's website, they have a link to SVT. If it is a cobra then they will send you a certificate with the build number and date all free of charge!!

if the intake is a large area maybe about 12"x 7" with a cobra in the middle then its a real cobra, if its just a lil rectangle box 2-3"x5-6" with a pony then its a GT

the only true way to identify if its a real cobra is to check the VIN number...about halfway through the VIN number there should be a letter...if im not mistaken i think yours should be a "C" ....mine is a "D".....luv jenna

On a '97 Cobra, the 8th digit of the VIN # should bea "V" </P>

Ifs its a GT the 8th digit would be an "X"</P>

hope all this helps</P>

Look at the brake lights. I can't remember if it is for the 94 and 95 years only orall butalso the cobras have the brake lights in the wing as the gts do not. Ofcourse if someone wanted to go all out and spend the money to make it a cobra then install the brake lights I guess they could but most dont think about it. </P>

I once saw a mustang 97 said GT on the side but he had a cobra above the gt..... I also seenNissan GTR emblems on the side of a mustang but anyways... On the bodiesFord and SVTusually does some major but small differences to the bodies. Major enough to tell but small enough that you wouldn't think about installing or doing to your gt right away for instance the break lights, one year they had something different with the under plating on the bumpers and what not. That you could buy a GT and install the cobra bumper but the only real way you would have the cobra bumper is if it came off a cobra and not an aftermarket.</P>

Junk like that, the easiest way to really tell is the vin number instead of looking up all that junk and history on the bodies and performance parts.</P><edited><editID>Cdprowl</editID><editDate>37960.6075</editDate></edited>
