Default check engine light

what's good, i'm trying to find a way to check my friend's check engine light (01 4.6L) without buying a scan tool. i have a scan tool, but it's the ISO protocol and only works on imports. is there some sort of diagnostic mode you can switch the ecu to so that it can display the check engine code on the gauge cluster? i haven't looked under the hood yet because I haven't seen him, but he says it runs like crap, i'm assuming it's an o2 sensor, map/maf sensor (whatever you guys have), IAT sensor, or something of that sort. but either way i don't want to fix anything blindly, i want to know exactly what's wrong.

Analog volt meter works the best. Just find out how to hook it up and read the codes.

Buy a good one on eBay or www.vancebaldwin.com

This one is for ECC-IV, but on ECC-V it will be similar.
